They have been chosen. We always choose eight. Why? Because pumpkins are too beautiful to limit yourself to one each. Like horse chestnuts, there is always another one even more appealing to be had. Why not nine? Because that would be getting out of hand. Plus the trunk of the car is only so big. Novelty for this year: an entirely green one.

My ritual was always two: a tall one on the thin side, and a little fat one. I always carved the same face on the small one -- woebegone, sad eyes and a wailing mouth.

Do they do Hallowe'en in NZ? Do they have pumpkins at this time of year? What is a person over there to do?

I really don't know. I haven't noticed any Halloween candy displays or decorations in the stores in the tiny town where I live, but I'm so new here. Pumpkins are harvested in around April/May in Godzone.
