Ready for the return of the RUHUs.

On south-facing, wooded slopes, salmonberry flowers are opening.

Which means Rufous Hummingbirds should soon be here. Usually they appear at my feeders near March 15, but I have seen them as early as March 10.

In any case, it's time to sterilize the feeders and whip up a batch of sugar water (one part sugar:three parts water for RUHUs --they like it sweet).

Depressing fact about these little birds: their numbers have decreased almost 60 percent in the last 40 years. Habitat loss through deforestation in both breeding and wintering grounds is probably the major cause of this decline.
