Silent scream (followed by silent profanity).

Trodden-upon Banana Slug, Ariolimax columbianus, emitting slime.

I believe that a member of the noisy party galumphing along the trail ahead of me unknowingly stepped on this Banana Slug. Slugs have well-developed nervous systems, and you can bet being stepped on hurt. They make no sound, but speak volumes with slime. Here is how a slug says “OW!”

Poor thing. It can crawl over broken glass with nary a scratch, but it can't escape the galumphing foot unscathed. I believe I am in that small minority of people who actually like slugs -- except, of course, when I galumph upon them barefoot in the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Yes. If ever again in charge of the trails of a public forest I will erect signs: "No galumphing!"

I'm probably the only one you've heard of who actually feeds slugs. Rilly. Slugs love cat food, and one night this last week as I was removing the leftovers of the food I use to feed a few feral cats (yes, I do TNR - trap, neuter, release), I noticed a colossal slug, the hugest I'd ever seen: fat and 6 inches long, and making a beeline for the food dish. I got the feeling he'd been around for a while. A senior citizen slug. So I left a few kitty kibbles for him and helped him out of the danger zone of the Closing Garage Door. Got me some slug karma, don'tcha know. hahaha.
