First trip south, and the natives are not friendly.

Golden-crowned Sparrow, first winter.

A pair of these large, plump sparrows appeared in the yard today, sending the resident Song Sparrow into a tizzy. My yard! He chased them out, for now. The golden-crowns are both hatch-year birds, and add a bit of fall flavour to the backyard avifauna. They're on their way through, heading south. Some of this species winter in the Lower mainland, but not here in the sterile 'burbs. These are youthful transients, hatch-year hobos.
