Great grey hunter.

While putting out the trash last night I came across this speeding mollusk.

It is Limax maximus, the Great Gray Garden Slug, native to Europe and Asia Minor. It is the fastest of our slug fauna, and its cheetah spots reflect its true nature. It will chase down and partially devour other slugs, leaving their gluey corpses strewn on the sidewalk.

Here it is, winking.

I stepped on one of those cheetahs at night the other week whilst getting the garbage ready for morning. I was bare-foot. It popped. Needless to say, there was so much body juice it splashed up my ankle. I hobbled to the sink and put my foot in water...duh...like we know how well water and slime works....

It was an accident, I must add. I like slugs, even non-native, superfast, aggressive slugs.

Seriously? It chases down and eats other slugs???

Yes, it is a cannibal slug.

Hope I never come upon one of those in a dark alley!
