Come on in, the water's lumpy!

Courageous Gadwall.

A long, hot, dry summer leads to low water levels in duck ponds. A healthy dose of fertilizer (duck or otherwise) makes for happy algae, resulting in an algal bloom. You couldn't pay me to swim in that, but Gadwall seems not to mind.

She might start minding if algal bloom is what's killing the scoters and other ducks off the WA coast at the moment. Yuck.

Karen, Yuck indeed. This here is freshwater algae, so perhaps not the same thing, but it's not a good sign in any case. I don't know much about algae, but I would guess this is a blue-green.
