Three days of howling wind and hammering rain have left almost nothing on the trees except for the odd plastic bag-- and this magnificent pear-sized fruit, whatever it is. In a break between storms, the fruit holds firm. It asks, "That's the best you got?"

Another storm approaches.

Or, maybe it's the tree that's asking, and the fruit is a digit that it's holding up in defiance? :)

That does look magnolia-like. I saw similar ones here this fall, someone IDed them for me at the Arboretum. Wonder when the next windstorm will hit? We sure got a lot of them last month!
