Zoological interruption.

I was turning the compost heap and uncovered this large and handsome beetle. We chased her around on the patio for a while, and then let her go in a quiet part of the garden. Carabus nemoralis (European Ground Beetle), I think. BugGuide Reference (with a comment by Eric R. Eaton that explains how to identify gender).

Now back to the compost.

Handsome little dude. It fills me with joy when something so small and "insignificant" stops real time and starts the clock ticking on discovery time! ~karen
