8, 10, 12 mph. Those are the suggested maximum Ring-necked Pheasant running speeds I have found online. Quick someone, put one on a treadmill. I must know.
I hope it is not running away from some idiot with a shotgun. That is the funniest picture (#2), it really does look as if it's wilted and panting after its burst of speed!
Confession all, and funnier than the fiction that the bird in image 2 is panting. It is really displaying for me. This rather confused and lonely fellow has been courting humans, gender no issue.

I can attest it was quite fast when it was running beside me biking. How fast exactly, maybe at least 10-mph?
I have no idea why someone would measure this though.
The bird in the second picture really does look like its panting.

That's fast! I always loved seeing those pheasants in the fields around where I grew up. Now I almost never see them.
Such a stately bird! I love pheasant. The colors are so rich!
