Summer half done.

Japanese anemone.

I saw the first short-horned grasshopper of the season, a hot-weather bug, its presence a sign of summer half done. I came across it walking back from the grocery store. As is their way, the orthopteran flew crazily far from where it had been, and then suddenly folded up and dropped, landing at an odd angle in the middle of the road, an hour-hand without a clock. I detoured to scare it back to safety and it flew to someone's driveway, finding the shade of a rear wheel. Think bug, think.

The Japanese anemones are opening, another sign of summer half done. They will bloom until the end.
