The quest for water.

Yes, it is cold. I dumped a kettle of hot water onto the birdbath.  Result?  One-inch-thick lens of ice becomes two inches thick.

I have a heated watering hole ... keeps the water just above freezing. Not that the birds seem to drink out of it. I think they just dibble on snow.

My homemade birdbath has a tray that I can remove to drain and clean. Last night, I decided it was time to bring it in at night to thaw and fill with fresh water in the morning.

It took 5 kettles of boiling water to thaw it enough to disengage it from the bottom section.

I am thinking it would be nice to invest in one of those heated ones, like Eileen's.

Your part of the continent is getting cold earlier than mine (Northeast United States). Isn't it supposed to happen the other way around?

Eileen and Susannah, I'll have to come up with some sort of similar solution; this early cold doesn't bode well.

RPS, Yes, we seem to have your weather. We'll try to take good care of it, and will send it back to you as soon as possible.
