Fading light.

I arrived at the west end of the island at 3:45, which at this time of year meant about half an hour until sunset.  A little earlier the weather had cleared, and the light on the mountains and water and everything else had become interesting.  Many humans had emerged from their burrows and were walking along the dyke.

Northwest, the water was dark.

West, over the foreshore marsh, the water was opalescent.

The water glowed gold where the sun now sets, which is considerably south of west.  Tonight it sank behind an advancing cloudbank that obscured the face and spine of Vancouver Island.

Cooper's Hawk, handsome in any light.
