Comic squirrel.

As we walked along a trail at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, it became apparent we were being watched.

California or Beechey Ground Squirrel, Spemophilus beecheyi.

Our observer popped out of the underbrush slightly behind us.  (I'm guessing people feed these fellows.)

Then it did something unexpected.

It lay down in the dust, shuffled around a bit,

and got dirt up its nose.

It didn't get any food, but did receive a few laughs.

Hilarious. Good quick work with the camera there. (Did it sneeze?) I wonder what it thought it was doing?

I think a performance like that deserves a meal.

How cute.
Sometimes the best things about vacations are the wildlife.
