Gnomes.

I found these puzzling little plants several years ago, while on a herping trip at Rice Lake on Vancouver's north shore.  I figured them to be some sort of fungus-associated non-photosynthesizer, but despite repeated googling (and even looking in books!) couldn't identify them.  Yesterday I received an email from a naturalist friend who was excited to have seen gnome plants.

Gnome plants?  I googled.

Aha.  Gnome plants.

Very nice. I've been looking for Hemitomes congestum down here to no avail so far. But I persist...

Oh, how cool is that? I've never heard of these--now I'll be on the hunt for them. They're not only beguiling, they lucked out on a fun name too.

We heard a report of Gnome plants on a local nature trail but got skunked instead. Lots of Indian Pipe though...
