First bird of the year is an oddity.

Leucistic Dark-eyed Junco

This jaunty junco was the first bird I saw out the window today. It spent most of the day here, plucking up suet shards or skulking in the shrubbery.

Unfortunately it has a damaged or deformed  right leg, making being a conspicuous oddball all the harder. Perhaps that's why the leg is as it is--an attack from a hawk or cat or crow...

Good luck, bird.

Freaky. Because a very similar bird recently popped up in a friend's backyard:

Diff bird, of course. Bit too far of a commute.

Thanks for the new word!
We were in Tofino on the weekend and spotted what I now know to be a leucistic crow. At the time I just thought he/she was pretty cool looking with lots of white on his/her wings. Looked like a healthy animal, flying along with the rest of the "murder". Couldn't get close enough to snap a good shot though.
