Brown-headed Cowbirds are in Grade 8.

Atop a decorative wooden gate in a garden:

Why the peculiar, undignified posturing?

Because down below in the grass, oozing sexy drabness, was a female brown-headed cowbird.

Was she paying attention to the boys?

If she was, cowbird coyness is a quantum leap above what primates manage.  She was head-down, poking around, eating bugs.

Love the photos and the story line. In 8th grade, I don't think I noticed boys at all, but later in 10th grade, my steady boyfriend told me he first noticed me in 8th grade!

=) So, some guys DO dance, apparently, if the stakes are high enough. Looks rather elegant, to me. 'Course I'm a girl...

"...head down, poking around, eating bugs." Hah! I had dates like that.

Lea, Yes, many boys are like that. It takes a while to get a clue.

bb, They were not dancing so much as posing. Cranes dance, gloriously with great inhibition. Western Grebes get down in a serious way too. But it seems to me that cowbirds try to look cool, hoping the gals notice. (& they don't.)

Dave, Well that sounds, um...what I mean to say is I hope things improved at some point.
