Azollapalloza.

A species of mosquito fern (Azolla sp.) has blanketed the man-made slough at Terra Nova Rural Park in Richmond BC.  In places it looks solid enough to walk on.

It isn't. It's a billion tiny floating ferns.

Are these a non-native species in your area?

I believe so. My guess is A. caroliniana.

Wow, Hugh! Awesome photo. Good to see you here. I have been absent much of the summer due to quick posts to Facebook. I hope to assemble some of those into posts on the blog. Will be retiring at the end of September and look to have a volunteer job at the local natural science museum helping catalog a couple of recently donated collections from other institutions. I look forward to some interpreter there teaching me lots. Take care! aubrey
