Bird on a wire.

Just as I was lamenting not finding anything new, something new.

I was riding my bike along a trail that borders a blueberry farm, and glanced up to see a bird perched diagonally on a wire. I skidded to a stop, and dug in my backpack for Mr. Hesitation. I needed to get a picture. I have never seen a Common Nighthawk in Richmond. Have I ever seen a nighthawk perched?

See the white wing bar. It means, "Yes I am, I am a Common Nighthawk!"

I could have taken a hundred pictures, so little did the bird care about my presence, but Mr. Hesitation's memory card was full.

How perfectly marvelous for the nighthawk to pose for you so you could show the wingbar!! Great sighting! ~karen

Karen, It was very kind of the bird to extend its wing. Not many birds wave their field marks at you.

That is so cool! I have never seen a nighthawk, much less in Richmond - but it is definitely a species I want to see!

The nature center where I worked for a few weeks had a resident nighthawk. It refused to eat from a dish, so we fed it bits of meat and insects with tweezers. You'd wave the morsel over its head and it would open up its huge gape to have it dropped in.
